Getting Good Sleep When You're Stressed

A healthy adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Not always an easy feat, especially when you're stressed. It happens to all of us at some point. Sleep is essential to your health and overall function and well being.

Similar to the 'fight or flight' feeling, when you are super stressed your body releases cortisol which can be a contributing factor in stress related insomnia. There are some things you can do to help regulate yourself and get the good night of sleep that you need.

-Make a list several hours before bedtime.

Curb your worries by addressing them early in the day. If somethings cannot be dealt with today, put them on a list with bullet points of how each problem will be tackled. This way you can clear your head and not think about them until it's time to deal with them.

-Watch something funny.

Laughter is really a great medicine. By smiling and laughing you are fighting the stress hormones and bringing on the relaxing ones. Watch a funny movie or show to help you unwind after a long day.

-Snuggle with your pets.

What could be more calming than the loving eyes of a cherished pet? Even just petting the soft fur of your cat or dog can be an incredible relaxant. Not to mention that we humans can sure learn a lot from critters when it comes to the sleep department. Not only do they realize the importance of getting the sleep they need but animals truly live in the moment and don't fret about the future. Take a cue from your furry friend.

-Take a bath.

Draw a warm bath with 1/2 cup epsom salt and a few drops of lavender oil. The scent of lavender is incredibly calming and the salt and water is cleansing and detoxing.

-Go to bed at the same time every night.

Keep your body scheduled by keeping the same bedtime every night. Start preparing your body for bed at least an hour ahead of time by turning of phones and computers as well as dimming the lights.

-Realize the importance of sleep.

The pressures of life do add up quickly. Guilt from feeling like you have not done enough can make you think that you are obligated to forego some shut eye to get more accomplished today. When you are tempted to do this, remember that everything and everyone that depends on you will only benefit more if you take care of yourself. Give yourself the room to take care of your well being. You just might be amazed to see some of those stressful worries, not so stressful anymore.
